Unite Community

A lot of the work United Way does involves transforming the attitudes of the community through education on many of the challenges we face together. Long-term solutions begin with a thorough understanding. Well, it seems CN has taken the transformation literally as their building now showcases the United Way message - Unite Community - along their 127 St. side.

The atrium there is where they also host their major workplace campaign events like their very successful Book Sale and the Chili Cookoff.

Two new additions to their campaign this year are some very important product drives with names as creative as their purpose - ‘Operation Fresh Start' and ‘Walk a Mile in My Boots'.

Operation Fresh Start is designed to collect toiletries for shelters and for events like Homeless Connect. These "starter" items, things most of us are able to take for granted, are critical to individuals who are trying to get off the streets and into a better situation.

Walk a Mile in My Boots is a great way for employees to get involved. Because CN provides a subsidy to their employees to purchase new work boots periodically, many employees have several pairs of boots that are still in good condition. This drive allows them to put these boots to good use and donate them to people who can put them to use.

With strong Executive support (a $65,000 Corporate Gift) and a dedicated Employee Campaign Chair who not only provides guidance and motivation here in our city, but to other locations around Alberta as well, it's easy to see why CN was able to raise over $218,000 last year in the Capital Region alone.

CN is proving every day the importance of community and with their level of commitment to it, they will no doubt achieve their goal this year as well.
