Welcome to the Neighbourhood
July 25th marked the day of the United in the Park event. Held in Butler Park in the midst of 30+ degree weather, the scorching heat wasn't enough to keep musicians and fans alike from making the trees shake with a few choice beats.
Oh, Snap! DJ's, a Jazz Quintet, Magic the Gathering, Krystle Dos Santos and The Consonance were all on hand to welcome United Way to the neighbourhood with a bit of dance, jazz and R&B.
Aside from welcoming United Way to its new home in the Stony Plain Road area and launching The Haven Social Club as a non-profit and huge supporter of local talent, it was a great opportunity for the Stony Plain Road Business Revitalization Zone to hold their annual BBQ.
The Stony Plain Road BRZ organized and manned serving food during the event, cooking in front of those hot grills through the scorching heat to ensure everyone was well fed. On top of that, they raised around $500 for United Way! Huge thanks to them for all their hard work.
Also deserving of thanks is The Haven Social Club for not only lining up FIVE musical acts in the park, but for hosting the after party at their building which is just two doors down from United Way on Stony Plain Road. The after party featured 2009 JUNO nominee Souljah Fyah, who also received the 2009 Best Reggae Band in Canada award at the Canadian Reggae Music Awards. All were amazing performances.
Music was made possible by a Jasper Place Revitalization grant from the city.
When it was all over, the United in the Park event had accomplished its goal - to unite people. They came from many areas and were united by music, food and good conversation. It was more than just people having a good time though. It was a community proving that Jasper Place is ready for change and that when the time comes there are people willing to lead it.
