Ice-cold winters prompt heart-warming coat donations
EDMONTON, AB – Today, outside Rexall Place, United Way and Page The Cleaner kicked off the 22nd annual Coats for Kids & Families campaign – a program that provides warm coats and other winter items to men, women and children in the Alberta Capital Region.
“It’s hard to imagine to enduring our winter months without the appropriate clothing, but for many of the people living in poverty in our community, that is a cold, harsh reality. We are standing outside our iconic hockey arena to help paint a picture in people’s minds: last year, we distributed enough coats to fill every second seat in Rexall Place and this year, we anticipate the need will be just as great,” said Mona Hale, 2013 United Way of the Alberta Capital Region Board Chair. “Working with the generosity of our partners and the people in the Capital Region, we will work to ensure that no one is left out in the cold.”
For the 22 years, Coats for Kids & Families has been supported by a key partnership with Page The Cleaner, who will once again receive and clean donated coats at all their locations in the Edmonton area.
“Helping to provide clean, warm coats for people in our community is something that makes all of us at Page The Cleaner feel very proud. Every year, we look forward to this event and being able to give back in such a meaningful way,” said Jim Maurais, Corporate Sales Manager, Page The Cleaner. “It’s amazing to think that, over the years, we’ve cleaned over 210,000 coats through this program.”
Once cleaned, the coats are sent to United Way’s In-Kind Exchange for sorting by numerous volunteers and then distributed throughout the community by United Way and partner organizations. In addition to the regular drives at Page The Cleaner, two special coat donation drives will happen this year at Rexall Place.
“In order to encourage community-wide involvement in the program, we will encourage season ticket holders and game patrons to bring gently-used coats, mitts or toques to the Oil Kings game on Sunday, October 20 and the Oilers game on Tuesday, November 19,” said Executive Director of Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, Natalie Minckler. “We are very pleased to partner again with Coats for Kids & Families and share this opportunity with our hockey fans.”
The Coats for Kids & Families campaign is presented by United Way of the Alberta Capital Region, Page The Cleaner, the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation and Global Edmonton. Community Sponsors include: ABC Press, 630 CHED, CISN Country, Edmonton Examiner, iNews880, Fresh FM and the Edmonton Sun.
