Many young evacuees will finish the year in the Alberta Capital Region

EDMONTON, AB – Fort McMurray children who were evacuated with their families last week will get some help to finish the school year from our local United Way’s Tools for School program.

Being close the end of the school year, and with little indication of when evacuees will be able to return home, some Fort McMurray families are registering their children in schools across the Alberta Capital Region.  While this may help them finish off the school year, another gap remains – school supplies.

“We were so pleased to see we had about 1,500 backpacks from last year’s program still in stock at our United Way InKind Exchange,” explained Jenn Dermott, Program Coordinator for United Way of the Alberta Capital Region.  “Now kids will immediately get backpacks filled with exactly what they need for their grade level, can join local classes and continue learning as they await plans to return home.”

Calls started into the United Way office on Monday morning and, by early Tuesday, requests had come in from a wide variety of school boards needing help for hundreds of students that will join classrooms at nearly 60 schools in the region.

Tools for School is a long-established community program that provides backpacks full of school supplies to students whose families have limited resources, helping them get the right start in classes, ranging from kindergarten through grade 12.

This program could not be possible without the support of our Tools for School Community Partner, Staples and our community sponsors, ABC Press, City, Edmonton Sun, Edmonton Examiner and Newcap Radio (CFCW, Capital FM, K-97).
