I started working for the Community Building and Investment department in 2006. Professionally, I take pride in the work that our organization is doing to make our community a better place. I appreciate being able to work with diverse groups both internally and in the community as part of my daily responsibilities at United Way. I work with a great team and my job is very rewarding.
This organization is family friendly and supportive of overall wellbeing, both things I personally value. Our comprehensive benefits package, competitive vacation time policy and Christmas and summer hours are all very important to me as the mother of a young child. This office facility has an on-site gym and is very close to the river valley which allows me to be active during my lunch hour. In addition, there are opportunities such as yoga, art lessons and professional training for personal development.
I’m very happy to work for an organization that aligns with both my professional and personal values.
I’ve worked at United Way for about 3 years. After a term as a Sponsored Campaign Representative I moved into the role of Campaign Manager. My current portfolio of companies and organizations are largely based in the Heartland Region.
Working at United Way aligns directly with my personal philosophy of doing something to give back to the community that I live in. And the people I work with are amazing and they inspire me to give my best every day. We work hard, our days can be long and tiring but we always rally around each other to support and encourage and give our best in the service of our community and our friends and neighbours.
Simply put, I feel very fortunate to be working in a job where you are surrounded by goodness and kindness every day.
Jennifer Herrick, Director, Engagement Marketing
I’ve worked at United Way for almost ten years and held a variety of roles. I started out in business development, and worked on getting new people and companies to come onboard with United Way. Then I moved to being a campaign manager, working with a variety of accounts throughout campaigns. And finally, I moved to the marketing department about three year ago to become the Director of Engagement Marketing.
One of the things that my department does is to help people understand where their donations go and the work that United Way does in the community. One of the ways which we do this is by recruiting and training community impact speakers. They’re either people who work at our partner-funded agencies or they’re people who have been helped by one of those agencies. Being able to hear the stories of how United Way donor dollars have helped them from where they were to where they are now, I think that does it for me every time.
The work is fun, you get to be really creative and innovative. And the people are great. But I think the variety and the flexibility has been a big factor for me. Everyone’s really supportive of that. Especially with a young family, flexibility is a priority.
Danielle, Director, Information Services
My commitment to the sector really began with my role at a United Way funded agency - E4C, where I was able to make an impact with projects such as the Kids in the Hall Bistro and the Women’s Emergency Accommodation Centre in Edmonton’s historic flatiron building.
It was a natural progression in my career to join United Way in 2000 and I have enjoyed my work immensely as I manage projects and engage with so many amazing staff and volunteers. The people I work with are smart, committed and professional. I am never happier than when I am problem solving and talking through solutions with my colleagues at work. I love working with and leading team members inside our organization so that together, we can help improve the lives of others.
My work at United Way has been demanding and interesting; feeding my passion to make things better. I love my work because I know it really matters – to the people I work with and to the people in our community – and that means a lot to me!
Earl, Manager, Inkind Exchange
I started my career with United Way in 2005, previously working in transportation and logistics in the private sector. I manage United Way’s InKind Exchange, where we help connect the business sector with community, through inkind giving.
The most rewarding aspect of my role is knowing that the work I do will help improve the lives of people in our community, by helping to create pathways out of poverty.
I work with a close knit group of people who share the same values, which is important to me. The passion my team has is inspiring to me, and I enjoy coming to work each day.
The organization has provided me with internal and external training through various courses to ensure success in my role. The management team is very supportive and provides me with excellent mentorship. It is a privilege to work for an organization that is committed to bringing improvement to our community.

I joined the Organizational Development team almost five years ago; I was excited to be a part of a recognized organization that has a history of providing needed support to the community. My values of improving social conditions were in direct alignment with United Way’s mission and my role as a Human Resources Specialist allows me to contribute to overall organizational effectiveness.
I am thankful for the mentorship I have received from my supervisor and enjoy the broad scope of work and special project involvement. I especially love the on going opportunities to interact with a variety of people within my recruitment and training role. Our collaborative team work approach and opportunities to share and learn from one another is also appreciated.

Allan, Vice President, Community Building and Investment
I’ve been with United Way since September 2008. Previously, I had spent 15 years of my life working in the not-for-profit sector, at both local and national levels. The opportunity to work for this organization, which is focused on addressing issues in the region where I live, was extremely appealing to me.
Joining the United Way team also represents a logical progression for me in my career. From an agency perspective, I’ve been on the receiving end of United Way funds/support, and have seen first-hand the difference United Way’s contributions make on behalf of people in need. The chance to be on the ‘giving’ side, as a funder, partner, and community mobilizer, was something I couldn’t pass up.
Starting out as Director of the Community Building and Investment team, and now as Vice President, I have had the honour of working alongside many of the Alberta Capital Region’s great social service organizations. The people who commit their lives to these agencies, and the individuals and families they serve, are extraordinary! They inspire me, and indeed our entire organization, to do our very best to support their work each and every year!
I’m grateful to United Way for giving me the chance to contribute to making Edmonton and surrounding communities a better place to live for everyone. The people who work here are amazing and it’s such a privilege to be part of the United Way team! My time here has provided me with many rewarding opportunities and I’ve been able to learn so much along the way.
