Coats for Kids & Families
What is ‘Coats for Kids & Families'?
Coats for Kids and Families is a United Way campaign that began in 1992 due to overwhelming requests from families and individuals with limited resources. Many families, after dealing with sharply rising living expenses and being negatively affected by the ever changing economy, simply don't have the means to purchase the clothing needed to stay warm during Alberta's harsh winters. The most vulnerable among us are children. Without adequate winter clothing, a child will have a difficult time reaching their full potential.
How does it work?
We are asking the community at large to donate new and gently worn coats by dropping them off at one of our Drop-Off locations. While trying to meet the need in our community, we understand it is important to respect the dignity and help ensure the health and safety of the program's recipients. As a result, a major partnership has developed between United Way and Page the Cleaner. All coats donated to the program are dry cleaned by Page the Cleaner and then collected by United Way's InKind Centre where they are sorted and packaged by groups of volunteers. The InKind Centre delivers coats to social agencies throughout the Alberta Capital Region who then distribute the coats to those in need.
What is the goal?
Last year, over 16,000 coats were collected, cleaned, sorted and distributed. This year's need is projected to be significantly higher - as much as 20% over last year's hefty numbers. Between the highest rents in Alberta's history and increasing numbers of homelessness, we're planning to support many people who have not been impacted in years past. Industry experts are suggesting some of the people impacted will be working class people who, after prioritizing living expenses, won't have the means to buy coats for the winter. This year, we are expecting the need to reach 18,000.
Most requested items?
All donations are greatly appreciated; however, the most critical donation requests are for infants, toddlers, and men's sizes.
How can I get more involved?
Community awareness and support are crucial for a successful program. We encourage groups of co-workers, community groups, church groups and friends to organize local collection drives. Download a copy of the poster and try to collect as many coats as you can. When your Coats for Kids and Families collection drive is completed, the coats can be dropped off at the main Page plant in Edmonton, located at 11416 142 Street.
Where can I donate my new or gently worn coat?
Any of the 22 Page the Cleaner locations will accept donations from October 16th, 2009 - April 15, 2010
