2016 Spirit Awards

The Awards of Distinction recognize those exceptional individuals and groups who embrace the notion that ordinary people have the potential to achieve extraordinary things.

Selection Process

The Spirit Awards Selection Panel of external volunteers and staff select recipients in each category.  Award nominees will be notified by February 9, 2017. Awards will be presented at the annual United Way Awards of Distinction Banquet on February 23, 2017.

Deadline for all nominations: December 31, 2016

Award winners will be accepted based quality of nomination and achievement in the overall workplace campaign.  Nominators should provide adequate detail and specific examples relevant to the award category criteria.


Award Categories

  1. Best Leaders of the Way Campaign
  2. Campaign Committee of the Year
  3. Creative Campaign Award
  4. Education and Awareness
  5. Employee Campaign Chair (ECC) of the Year, Private Sector or Public Sector
  6. Outstanding Canvasser of the Year, Public/Private Sector
  7. Outstanding Volunteer
  8. Rising Star Award
  9. Small Business Award

1. Best Leaders of the Way Campaign

This award is presented to the Campaign committee who:

  • showed creativity, enthusiasm and excellence in the execution of a Leadership giving campaign, and
  • developed specific, comprehensive & effective strategies towards canvassing at the leadership level.

Nomination committee will also review the number of leaders and total leadership dollars achieved in 2015 and 2016 in the award selection.

Nomination committee will also consider the history of support from this particular individual.


2. Campaign Committee of the Year

This award is presented to the Workplace Campaign Committee that:

  • followed best practices to promoting United Way Campaign (e.g. promoted education & awareness of United Way, engage United Way representatives, tracks and reports results, etc.),
  • highlighted the impact of United Way donations,
  • showed outstanding teamwork and commitment towards meeting campaign goals and objectives, and
  • showed creativity and enthusiasm in the promotion/execution of the workplace campaign.

3. Creative Campaign Award

This award is presented to recognize an individual or organization that demonstrated exceptional creativity in their support of United Way in the workplace.  This creativity could relate to theme, special events, communications or overall approach. Selection of this award will be based on:

  • creativity in theme,
  • excellence in the planning & execution of the approach,
  • incorporation of education and awareness of the impact of United Way donations, and
  • achievement of stronger than expected results in the workplace.

Nomination committee will also review overall campaign dollars, number of leaders and number of donors for 2015 and 2016 in the award selection.


    4. Education and Awareness  

    This award is presented to the Workplace Campaign that:

    • increased awareness of community needs and the impact of United Way donations (e.g. Hosted presentations, incorporated a strong education approach in the campaign, attended volunteer training sessions, etc.),
    • showed creativity and enthusiasm in the promotion/execution of the workplace campaign, and
    • showed excellence in coordinating and motivating co-workers.

    Nomination committee will also review overall campaign dollars, number of leaders and number of donors for 2015 and 2016 in the award selection.


    5. Employee Campaign Chair (ECC) of the Year, Private Sector or Public Sector

    This award is presented to the Employee Campaign Chair who:

    • provided leadership in the planning and execution of all workplace campaign activities,
    • provided opportunities for all employees at all levels in the organization to learn about and support United Way,
    • recruited and led a highly effective campaign committee to achieve challenging campaign goals and objectives, and
    • demonstrated creativity and commitment that went above and beyond the call of duty.

    Nomination committee will also review overall campaign dollars, number of leaders and number of donors for 2015 and 2016 in the award selection.  (Separate awards presented to private, public and small-medium businesses.)


    6. Outstanding Canvasser of the Year, Public/Private Sector

    This award is presented to the workplace employee campaign volunteer, committee member, canvasser or leadership coordinator that:

    • demonstrated dedication to coordinating canvassing and/or other campaign activities,
    • motivated fellow employees to learn about and support United Way; and
    • showed creativity and commitment that went above and beyond the call of duty.

    7. Outstanding Volunteer

    This award is presented to an individual who:

    • demonstrates exceptional and unparalleled commitment to United Way’s mission to create pathways out of poverty, and
    • is a United Way volunteer(e.g. long term supporter, campaign supporter, senior level volunteer, community supporter, etc.).

    Nomination committee will also consider the history of support from this particular individual.  Any United Way volunteer is welcome to be nominated in this category.  Up to three individuals will be awarded.


    8. Rising Star Award

    This award is presented to the Workplace Campaign Committee that:

    • achieved stronger than expected results and engagement compared to previous years,
    • followed Best Practices to promoting United Way Campaign(e.g. promote education & awareness of United Way, build a committee, engage United Way representatives, etc.), and
    • showed creativity and enthusiasm in the promotion and execution of the workplace campaign.

    Nomination committee will also review overall campaign dollars, number of leaders and number of donors for 2015 and 2016 in the award selection.


    9.  Small Business Award

    This award is presented to the organization of 100 employees or less that:

    • showed creativity and enthusiasm in the promotion and execution of the workplace campaign, and
    • achieved strong results and engagement.

    Nomination committee will also review overall campaign dollars, number of leaders and number of donors for 2015 and 2016 award selection.
