CELEBRATE CANADA 150

In celebration of Canada 150, Edmonton Community Foundation is generously providing a grant of up to $1.5 million to support United Way’s mission of Creating Pathways Out of Poverty.

Imagine being able to double your impact and what it would mean to local families and individuals struggling in poverty.

Instead of just trying to survive, they’ll have a chance to develop the skills and abilities that lead to lives of independence. Parents will get help to support their children in the early development years. And kids will go to school with food in their stomachs, get support from mentors and can focus on achieving their full potential.

Which gifts qualify for the match?

This exciting match will be available for new and increased donations in support of United Way’s mission to Create Pathways Out of Poverty. Specifically:

  • New donations of $1,200 or more (by those who did not give to United Way in 2016). 100% of the donation will be matched, to a maximum of $10,000.
  • Repeat donations that are increased to $1,200 or more (by those who gave to United Way in 2016). 100% of increase will be matched, to a maximum of $10,000.
In order to qualify for the match, 2017 donations must be made in support of United Way’s mission to Create Pathways Out of Poverty.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) Which donations are eligible?

  • New donations of $1,200 or more. (100% of the donation will be matched, to a maximum of $10,000);
  • Donations by those who did not support and/or only partially supported United Way’s Creating Pathways Out of Poverty mission in 2016, and who now direct $1,200 or more to United Way. (100% of the increase to United Way will be matched, to a maximum of $10,000);
  • Repeat donations below Leadership level which are increased to $1,200 or more. (100% of the value of the increase will be matched, to a maximum of $10,000);
  • Repeat donations at the Leadership or Pathfinder level which are increased. (100% of the value of the increase will be matched, to a maximum of $10,000).

2) Will my donation qualify if it is directed to another registered charity besides United Way of the Alberta Capital Region?

No. Only donations which support United Way’s mission to Create Pathways Out of Poverty will be eligible. These include donations in support of Women United, All In For Youth, and our three program pillars – Education, Income and Wellness.

3) What if I gave 100% of my Leadership gift to another registered charity last year – and this year I direct my gift to United Way’s mission to Create Pathways Out of Poverty – will my donation qualify?

Yes, your donation will be considered a new gift which will qualify for a 100% match by ECF.

4) What if I gave 50% of my Leadership gift to another registered charity last year – and this year I direct ALL of my gift to United Way’s mission to Create Pathways Out of Poverty – will my donation qualify for a match?

Any new money (above $1,200) donated towards United Way qualifies for the ECF match. For example, if you gave $600 to UW and $800 to another registered charity in 2016, and you invest your entire gift of $1,400 in United Way in 2017, you will be eligible for an $800 match.

5) How does the match work?

New donations at the Leadership level of $1,200 and above will receive a dollar for dollar match from ECF, effectively doubling the impact. Returning donors (those who gave in 2016) who now give at the Leadership level of $1,200 or higher will see the increased portion of the donation matched dollar for dollar, effectively doubling the impact of the increase. The match applies only to donations made in support of United Way’s mission to Create Pathways Out of Poverty.

For example:
  • If you didn’t give to United Way last year and now donate at least $1,200, the total value of your 2017 gift will be matched by ECF.
  • If you directed $600 to United Way and $600 to another registered charity last year, and then give $1,200 to United Way in 2017, then $600 will be matched by ECF.
  • If you gave $2,000 to United Way last year and now give $3,000, the $1,000 increase will be matched by ECF in 2017. (See table for more examples.)

6) How will the matching funds be spent?

The ECF matched funds will be invested to change the lives of families and individuals struggling in poverty within the Alberta Capital Region. $500,000 will be invested in 2018 on current priorities, and $1 million will be used to create an endowment to support future priorities. Our Creating Pathways Out of Poverty focus means that your dollars will:

  • Break the Cycle of Poverty (Helping children succeed through their school years);
  • Lift People Out of Poverty (Helping families build lives of stability and financial independence);
  • Provide a Safety Net (Helping people overcome some of life’s most challenging personal struggles).

7) Why is it so important for me to consider increasing my gift this year?

The Edmonton Community Foundation Canada 150 Matched Donation Program is being offered in 2017 to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. It is a new opportunity to maximize the impact of your donation to help families and individuals in our community who are struggling in poverty. It means your United Way investment will make a greater difference than ever, right here in the Alberta Capital Region.

8) What qualifies as a “new” donation?

A gift given by anyone who did not donate to United Way’s mission to Create Pathways Out of Poverty in 2016.
