The “Art” of Volunteering

If your plans for this weekend are still open, you should definitely check out the 2nd Annual Edmonton Timeraiser.  What is that you may ask?  Well it is an fantastic event that helps connect people with volunteer opportunities in their communities through a silent art auction.  The Timeraiser is unique because instead of bidding money on local artwork, you bid your time in volunteer hours.  So not only can you feel good about helping your community, you can also collect some amazing local artwork ta-boot!

As a community partner in this event, United Way is proud to be able to help connect people to Agencies who are seeking volunteers (at this event and year round). Last year’s Timeraiser was a huge success, raising more than 4,000 hours and we are looking to do the same this year!! To put it into perspective there are 8,760 hours in a year, so that adds up to about 167 days of volunteering!  Very impressive.

So why volunteer?  Well, according to Harvard cardiologist Herbert Benson, the health benefits of doing good things for others are similar to those experienced by people who practice yoga, spirituality and meditation. The sense of calmness that comes from helping others is also known as the helper's high. These altruistic feelings reinforce the sense that one's life has a purpose. In turn, this enhances self-esteem, which then provides the motivation for a person to make better lifestyle choices.[i]  I’d say those are some pretty good reasons.

On top of being a great night out, it is great way to get involved in your community and learn about the volunteer opportunities that exist.  So if you’re looking to put some ‘colour’ into your weekend, ‘ease-l’ on over to the Edmonton Timeraiser, it’s sure to be the ‘highlight’ of your weekend!
