Have you got the will to chill? The students and faculty of the University of Alberta certainly do. And year after year they continue to help me discover the spirit of my community.
As I stood among the crowd of spectators at this year’s “Chillin for Charity” event on November 17, even the stream of heat coming from the hot tubs wasn’t enough to keep me warm. Dressed in my best winter attire, my teeth were chattering.
As I looked at the crowd and participants dressed in everything from winter parkas to string bikinis, all I could think was “Mother of pearl. Last week it was 9 degrees and today it is -12.” Not what I would call a lucky break.
I took a good look around me and all I saw were smiles. I could feel the excitement, the anticipation. The urgency to keep moving.
Dr. Mike Percy, Dean of the School of Business, was hopping from side to side waiting patiently to take the plunge and kick off the event. Then suddenly, we had lift off! Team after team journeyed into the icy waters of the inflatable wading pool.
Neither sleet nor snow, wind nor cold could damper the spirits of this group who came together to support their community.
Thank you to the University of Alberta for their committed support and the WILL to CHILL. I remove my toque and salute you!
