This year United Way has teamed up with Balwin School to set up a one-time distribution center in North East Edmonton. On the coattails of National Child Day, Coats for Kids and Families is holding the first ever Community Distribution Day. Come and visit us Saturday November 26th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If you or your family is in need of warm coats this winter, this is an opportunity to come and pick them up, free of charge, and enjoy a coffee and muffin donated by Mac’s Convenience Stores.
This is my first year with the Coats for Kids and Families Campaign and it has been a great and more often than not, a humbling experience. It is an amazing feeling to be part of something much bigger than yourself.
Working within the community for the last four years I thought I was very aware of the need, yet there is always that email that makes its way to my inbox and tugs at my heart strings. A mother or grandmother struggling to keep her family warm, a roof over their heads and food on the table; a father that needs insulated coveralls in order to continue employment outside in the winter months to keep food in his children’s tummies.
I use these anonymous stories of families in our community simply needing a helping hand to help our community understand the reason for the Coats for Kids and Families program. It’s not a handout, it’s simply a hand up, it’s our community coming together to ensure that everyone has what they need to stay warm this winter. By sharing these stories it allows them to feel part of something much bigger as well, the enthusiasm that encompasses the room during a day of caring is undeniable. It renews the heart to know that individuals walk out of a day of caring feeling inspired to volunteer their time, give what they can and share their experience with their family, friends and peers so that they too can inspire involvement in their community.
Coats for Kids and Families have been keeping the Alberta Capital Region warm for the past 20 years. Through many community partnerships and with the help of our flagship partner Page the Cleaner, United Way aims to collect and distribute 15,000 coats this year.
