Music Puts the Unity in Community

Can music create unity? It has been proven that music empowers people to move beyond their perceived limits. It draws people together, enhancing communication and morale. Music definitely had an impact at the TELUS World of Science Edmonton, Jan 4, 2012 where a flash mob surprised crowds exiting the IMAX theatre with a live musical and dance performance.

Four groups, each consisting of 3 to 4 dancers and one Planit Sound musical artist were placed throughout the building. They sang and danced their way through the gathering crowds of children and parents who stopped to enjoy the high energy performance. Some guests even expressed some of their own dance moves - a true flash mob success! Check out the video of the flash mob performance below.

Dance Alberta is a not-for-profit organization located in central Edmonton and is known for supporting other community organizations to bring dance into the lives of those who may not otherwise be exposed to the art form.  Dance Alberta put together the lyrical piece which consisted of 13 dancers ranging from 12 to 18 years of age.  What makes Dance Alberta so special is that each dancer volunteered their time to create and rehearse the choreography.

For me, the overwhelming support from Dance Alberta, TELUS World of Science and the enthusiasm from the crowd is a true demonstration of how music puts the “unity” in community.
