For many people in the Alberta Capital Region, this is the season of giving. With Christmas only a month away, lots of us are thinking about what gifts to give family and friends. Days like Black Friday and Cyber Monday can be enticing, with all the amazing discounts and offers, but amidst all the excitement try not to forget about community giving rather than gift giving.
Today is Giving Tuesday - a national movement that began in Canada last year, to encourage people to take a moment to reflect on ways to give back to the community. Over the year, the awareness really picked up and now partners with over 2700 organizations who support the cause of community giving, including United Way of the Alberta Capital Region.
Here at United Way we are collecting household items to to create baskets for people in the Capital Region who are moving into a new home but may not have all the basic necessities - like toilet paper, cleaning supplies and laundry soap.
There are many different ways to give on Giving Tuesday. It’s really up to you. You can give your time by volunteering. You can give a hand to someone that might need your help. You can go through your closets and donate your gently used winter wear to Coats for Kids and Families.
This great region already has a wonderful spirit of giving. We know that there are many people in our community that need supports and services to get them through the holiday season. By giving, we get to receive the joy of helping someone who needs it. Keep Giving Tuesday in the forefront of your mind this week. And make a commitment to give, not because you need a reason or a season, but because it feels good.
