Director, Communications

You’re a proven leader, experienced in developing results-based communications programs that grow successful brands and capture the hearts and minds of a community.  You’re an innovative and strategic thinker who thrives in a collaborative culture; bringing a can-do, problem-solving approach to the leadership table, while guiding and inspiring a creative team focused on growing support that changes the lives of thousands of families in the Edmonton and area community.  

As the Director of Communications, you’re a well-seasoned generalist who excels at developing and delivering strategies that create awareness and support the aligned marketing and communications efforts of the United Way of the Alberta Capital Region.  You have extensive experience in a wide variety of communications channels, advertising mediums, digital communication platforms and approaches, social media, professional video production, graphic design and print production, media relations, special events management and public speaking.  

You have developed organizational-wide content development strategies that expand the digital presence, while helping to drive towards organizational goals in brand building, demonstrating impact and raising funds to deliver critical community programs. Your exceptional written and verbal communication skills allow you to transition between styles focused on storytelling, speeches, ad and solicitation copywriting, blogging, factual reports and corporate presentations.  

You have managed challenging issues, internally and externally, and have strong facilitation skills. And your understanding of the philanthropic landscape brings you confidence in developing budgets and plans to build awareness of poverty and related social challenges in the community.

You will lead a small team of communications professionals and as part of your leadership role, you will develop and manage relationships with corporate, government, and non-profit partners; as well as with volunteers on small and large scales – many of which you will provide advice and support to in helping them share messages and connecting across the community.

Reporting to the Vice President, Community Engagement, your position works closely with the Director, Engagement Marketing; and cross-functionally with management team members in three other internal departments.  

Your team of communications professionals manages a broad scope of projects such as: workplace campaign promotions, special events of all scales, media relations, public information campaigns, digital content development, presentation development, investment opportunity proposals, social media, graphic design, in-house and contracted video production, corporate reporting, speech writing and more.

Your background includes a degree or diploma in communications, public relations or related discipline.  You have a minimum five years of experience in a similar position (with staff supervision) and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
