The Power of a Moment

2024/25 Annual Report

A Message from the Chair of the Board and the President & CEO

There is something so powerful about taking a moment to reflect on what is possible when a community comes together.

It’s not lost on any of us how challenging the last year has been. The number of people in need rises as our community grapples with the high cost of living, mental health challenges, and barriers to education at all ages and stages.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. Now is the time to use our power to build a stronger, more compassionate community together.

Women United is dedicated to uplifting women by removing barriers, and creating an equitable and just community.

United Way changemakers are leading the way by driving community conversations that increase understanding, and spur lasting change.

🌟 Make Your Mark had its biggest year yet, engaging 1,078 students to develop and lead community projects that made a real difference. About 6,200 individuals in our community were helped through these United Way-funded student leadership projects.

📢 Women United’s growing network of changemakers (1,471 and counting!) are making life better for women and girls across the region through sold-out events that challenge the status-quo, and by raising funds that go directly to breaking gender-bias barriers.

🎙️ The Do Local Good Podcast, hosted by GenNEXT volunteers, features insights from local experts, community leaders, and non-profits — bringing you closer to the real challenges and solutions that shape our region.

🤝 We’re seeing tremendous momentum with the launch of ReUnited, a volunteer initiative designed for retirees (or those nearing retirement) who want to stay engaged with United Way and focus on making a difference in the next chapter of their lives.

United Way is grateful to have the power of this movement supporting significant innovations that support the social sector, measure the long-term impact of key strategic initiatives, and band together with partners across the region to help people through crisis.

211 Alberta navigators support Jasper wildfire evacuees, in partnership with United Way of the Alberta Capital Region, Distress Centre Calgary, and Canadian Mental Health Association Edmonton
211 Alberta navigators were on-site in Jasper to support evacuees as they returned home after the Jasper wildfires. Image supplied by 211 Alberta.

📞  During the Jasper wildfire, 211 Alberta mobilized to help people navigate supports during evacuation. For the first time, navigators were on site during resident re-entry to connect with people face-to-face while helping them find the resources they needed during recovery.

💗  United Way launched our innovative Community Investment Strategy, welcoming 57 new and returning agencies to our funded partner network. By working alongside front-line agency partners and social sector experts, United Way builds collective capacity to address the challenges facing our community.

📈 Empower U’s holistic financial empowerment programming  enhances participants’ financial knowledge, but contributes to whole-person wellbeing and vibrant communities. Participants say they feel more comfortable talking about money, thanks to the program’s training, match savings, and financial coaching.

🏫  We’re seeing clear evidence that All in for Youth encourages students to come to school, stay in school, and graduate. More than 60% of students who spent three or more years in AIFY schools over the last eight years completed high school, a 27.4% increase compared to students with similar social demographics.

Your compassion and understanding make us so proud of this community. Every moment of your time, every donation, and every amplified voice comes together to make our region a better place for everyone.

Together, our movement powers moments that really matter. Thank you for making a difference.

Onwards,

Rob Yager

Investing in our Community

By listening and collaborating within our community, we can all better understand the barriers facing our region. United Way joins forces with government, social sector partners, community members, and businesses to champion solutions that have a broad impact, spreading benefits far and wide.

Because of the generous support of our community, United Way made the following investments in the Alberta Capital Region last year:

$8.9 million
social sector agency funding
United Way makes purposeful investments into social services and resources to ensure people have support when they need it most. These investments address both immediate needs and create long-term impact.
$11.8 million
United Way programs and initiatives
United Way brings partners together to coordinate efforts and amplify impact. In turn, we’re improving access to education, financial empowerment, and mental well-being.
$1.1 million
additional charitable investments
In addition to creating impact through our funding priorities, we steward additional investments to registered Canadian charities.

United Way collaborates across the social sector, government, and business to make it easier for people to find and get the help they need. Last year, we strengthened the social sector by investing in 57 local agencies, who served more than 392,000 people across the region.

You've Changed Lives

Thanks to the generosity of people like you, United Way is there to support our neighbours to succeed in school, take care of their mental well-being, and build stronger financial futures.

By joining together, we’re turning moments of hope and generosity into a movement of lasting change.

Empowering Financial Security

Every family deserves financial stability, not financial stress.

To build a resilient community, people must have access to a diverse range of employment and income opportunities that enable financial security. United Way and our partners support comprehensive programs and initiatives that provide financial education, resources, and opportunities for economic empowerment.

147,000

people accessed job training, food, basic needs, and other resources at United Way-funded agencies.

50,000

200+

people took part in Empower U, a United Way initiative that combines financial education with matched savings and financial coaching.

Strengthening Mental Well-Being

Mental health support can’t wait weeks or months.

Strong mental health is a vital aspect of a person’s overall well-being, but there’s a significant unmet need for community-based support — and it’s hard to navigate the system.

United Way collaborates with partner agencies to support mental health in our community by developing a robust network of resources and improving accessibility, making it easier for people to find the support they need.

153,000

people accessed counselling, mentorship, cultural supports, and other mental well-being services through United Way-funded agencies.

77,000

114,000+

calls, texts, and chats were answered by 211 Alberta, connecting people to essential community resources.

Removing Barriers to Educational Success

Every student deserves the chance to graduate and succeed.

Graduating high school sets a strong foundation for a successful and stable future. But too many families experience barriers that make it harder to stay in school.

United Way and our partners break down these barriers by championing equitable educational opportunities from early years to high school, helping students and families thrive academically and socially.

81,000

people accessed resources to support childhood development, literacy, and other education supports at United Way-funded agencies.

60,000

people removed barriers to educational success through United Way strategic initiatives and programs that help students and their families thrive.

3,200

students accessed All in for Youth wrap-around supports, helping them succeed in school and graduate.

The Power of Changemakers

Thanks to the generosity of people like you, last year our community raised and invested more than $25 million through United Way. Together, we are supporting our friends and neighbours to succeed in school, take care of their mental well-being, and build stronger financial futures.

Looking Forward

Thank you for believing in what United Way does and working with us to make the Alberta Capital Region a better place.

When we hear about how hard things are right now, building a community where everyone can thrive can feel overwhelming. But by working together, we help people overcome challenges and change their lives.

This change doesn’t happen all at once — it happens in moments:

Moments when someone takes a first step toward healing by calling 211 Alberta.

Moments when a family discovers hope for the future at an All in for Youth school.

Moments when dreams become a path to security through Empower U’s financial literacy courses.

And moments when caring people like you support United Way.

As we prepare to mark our 85th year of serving this incredible community, our United Way is looking to the future with hope and perseverance. By joining together, we can continue to turn these moments of hope and generosity into a movement of lasting change across our community.
