You can help vulnerable women and girls in your community.

Though Alberta has long been considered one of the wealthiest provinces in Canada, many Albertans are slipping into poverty — especially women — as a result of the global pandemic, rising cost of living, and the surge in inflation. Nearly two-thirds of low-wage earners in the Edmonton region are women. From single parenthood, increased caregiving demands, job loss, domestic violence, and increased anxiety and mental health challenges, women are at highest risk of being pulled into poverty.

This growing issue is what drew a group of passionate United Way of the Alberta Capital Region supporters to launch Women United, an important initiative focusing on creating equity and opportunity for local women and girls.

By combining our collective power — financial resources, talents, and connections — with United Way’s network, not only are we building authentic relationships with community-minded women and allies, we’re also actively working to break the cycle of poverty affecting women and families in our region. When women thrive, the community thrives.

United Way’s Commitment to Reconciliation

We are all Treaty people. United Way acknowledges our connection to one another, here on Treaty 6 Territory and Métis Nation of Alberta Region #4. The diverse Indigenous Peoples of this land include the nêhiyawak, Blackfoot, Dene, Anishinaabe, Nakota Sioux, Inuit, and Métis. Many of our staff are settlers living and working in this Territory. We all have a responsibility to uphold the spirit and intent of the original treaties and build relationships, trust, and understanding. We are grateful for the resources, knowledge, and culture Indigenous people share with us as we walk the path towards reconciliation together. We honour and respect Indigenous contributions supporting our work to ensure no one in our community is left behind.
