As I reflect on the past year, one word continues to stand out: community. What began as a move to a new city for work slowly became a year filled with connection, growth, and purpose — largely thanks to my journey with United Way’s GenNEXT Cabinet.
Hi, I’m Pauline, and I’ve been part of United Way’s GenNEXT Cabinet since April 2025. Moving to a new city in your late 20s is exciting — but let’s be honest, it can also feel a little lonely. When I moved to Edmonton in July 2024 to begin my role as an Out of School Time Program Coordinator with BGC Big Brothers Big Sisters of Edmonton & Area, I was excited about the work ahead. At the same time, I knew I wanted to find a sense of belonging through volunteer involvement.
United Way wasn’t new to me. Even back in Calgary, many of the programs I supported and coordinated were funded by United Way, so I had already seen firsthand how powerful community investment can be. When a former colleague introduced me to the GenNEXT Cabinet — and the meaningful projects, connections, and opportunities to create impact — it felt like the perfect fit. I’m so glad I said yes.
Joining GenNEXT opened the door to something truly special. Over the year, I met passionate young professionals from diverse industries, all united by the same purpose: giving back, volunteering our time, and creating real change in our community. Very quickly, GenNEXT became more than just a volunteer opportunity — it became a place to connect, grow, and belong.
One of my most memorable highlights this year was supporting GenNEXT’s Summer Fun Product Drive. I had the opportunity to deliver donation boxes across the city and connect with local businesses that generously supported the initiative. Later, I experienced the joy of picking up boxes filled with toys, sunscreen, and outdoor items and delivering them to Norwood Child & Family Resource Centre to support local families. It was a true full-circle moment that reminded me why this work matters — especially as someone who runs summer camps and understands how meaningful these items are for kids during that season. Seeing children light up with smiles throughout the summer is something I’ll never forget. It’s a powerful reminder that community generosity can turn simple acts into unforgettable moments — and that when people come together, real impact happens.
Looking back, GenNEXT also gave me opportunities to learn, reflect, and connect in meaningful ways. I attended impactful experiences like the KAIROS Blanket Exercise, which deepened my understanding of the history and ongoing impacts of colonization on Indigenous Peoples in Canada. I also loved participating in GenNEXT’s Sip & Paint networking event, where I was able to invite friends and colleagues to come along. And of course, there were fun social moments too, like our bowling night, where cabinet members could relax, connect, and get to know one another beyond our volunteer roles.
Another defining part of my year was participating in United Way’s Mentoring for Success program. I was matched with an incredible mentor who supported me as I navigated career decisions, professional growth, and network-building. Adjusting to a new city can feel overwhelming, but having someone to guide and encourage me made all the difference.
As I look back on this year, I’m incredibly grateful for everything GenNEXT has provided for me. In a short time, I found connection, purpose, mentorship, and a meaningful way to live out my passion for community impact. GenNEXT didn’t just help me give back — it helped me grow.
If you’re a young professional wanting to make a difference, connect with like-minded people, and find your place in the community, United Way’s GenNEXT Cabinet is a group worth being part of. Sometimes, all it takes is one group to turn a new city into a place that truly feels like home.
