Standing Shoulder to Shoulder: Women United Volunteers Support Teen Parents at Terra Centre

Women United Volunteers

This summer, Women United supporters rolled up their sleeves and proved what happens when a community of changemakers comes together with heart, strength, and purpose. Side by side, they spent the day at Terra Centre — a United Way funded partner agency that empowers teen parents to thrive as they raise their families.

With energy, laughter, and determination, volunteers prepared healthy meals in the kitchen and organized donations for the Clothing Closet program. These efforts, while hands-on, carried a bigger meaning: lifting the everyday load for young moms and dads who are working hard to build brighter futures for their children.

Terra Centre breaks down barriers for teen families

For many young parents in our community, limited income means tough choices — between putting food on the table, buying diapers, or covering other essentials. Terra Centre works to change that reality.

“Our goal is to remove as many barriers as possible for teen families so they can define success for themselves and reach their goals”, explains Twyla McGann, Communications Manager at Terra Centre. “Some of the barriers our participants face regularly include food insecurity, housing challenges, mental health concerns, and obstacles to education. We work with young parents to identify their goals and build on the strengths they already have.”

From nutritious meals and baby essentials, to parenting programs and cultural supports, Terra Centre provides young parents with tools and community connection so they don’t have to face parenthood alone. Each year, nearly 1,000 moms, dads, and children receive support through Terra’s programs.

Women United Volunteers in Action

When young parents feel seen, supported, and equipped with essentials, they can focus on caring for their children, finishing school, and building long-term stability.

For our Women United volunteers, this Day of Caring wasn’t just about chopping vegetables or folding clothes. It was about standing in solidarity with young parents who are too often overlooked.

“Food prep is a good way to help ensure proper nutrition for young parents in need. The meals we prepared were simple but healthy, and we expect they’ll be of real use,” share Women United supporters Darren and Shirley Andruko. “Volunteering alongside others who believe in lifting up women and families feels highly satisfying — these are our people.”

That sense of collective purpose — of belonging to something bigger than yourself — is at the heart of Women United. Together we can topple barriers,, allowing women and their families to thrive.
