Develop leaders. Strengthen culture. Create lasting change.

What if you could achieve your corporate social responsibility goals while also strengthening employee retention, leadership development, and your organization’s reputation — all at once? That’s exactly what the SCR program offers. By lending an employee, you:

  • Invest in their professional development with a personalized growth plan built alongside United Way.
  • Give them access to one-on-one mentorship from community and business leaders.
  • Add vital capacity to United Way during our busiest season — the fall workplace campaign — helping amplify impact across hundreds of local organizations.
  • Show your employees, clients, and community that your organization is deeply committed to your CSR goals and meaningful impact.
  • Bring back an employee who feels good, motivated, and equipped with new skills, confidence, and perspective.

The result? Stronger leaders. Higher morale. A more resilient workplace culture.

Two ways to get involved

Lend an Employee, Accelerate Their Career

Lend an employee to United Way for a 17-week term during our annual fall workplace campaign season (mid-August to late-December).

  • Salary and benefits are paid by the employer organization.
  • United Way manages day-to-day work activities and employee oversight.
  • Participating employees return to their workplace with advanced leadership skills, expanded professional networks, and a renewed sense of purpose

Sponsor the Program, Launch Someone Else’s Career

If your organization can’t spare an employee, a sponsorship gift of $16,000 makes a huge impact.

  • Your contribution allows United Way to hire a Sponsored Campaign Representative for the duration of the campaign season and directly funds their salary, benefits, and training.
  • You’ll give a qualified candidate the opportunity to gain invaluable professional and community leadership experience.

PCL is proud to have supported the Sponsored Campaign Representatives program since 1993, a decision we took because we know sponsored campaign representatives are key to making change in our community. We were also very excited to support the new mentorship program that helps foster a representative’s personal and professional growth. I recommend this program to those organizations smart enough to value the development of their future leaders.

Chris Pullen, Vice President and General Manager at PCL Construction

The SCR program is a fantastic growth opportunity that allows you to develop a wide range of skills, from communication and account management to relationship-building and event planning. You get an opportunity to work with diverse organizations, learn how fundraising and community engagement work, and make a real impact in your community. It’s a great way to build leadership skills, improve your problem-solving abilities, and expand your professional network.

FAQs

It doesn’t matter what sector you’re in — employees from any organization can participate! SCRs come from all types of roles and career stages:

  • Employees preparing for their first management role
  • Mid-career professionals seeking a growth opportunity
  • People nearing retirement who want to make a final, meaningful impact
  • Anyone with the passion to lead, collaborate, and make a difference

SCRs support the planning and execution of United Way workplace fundraising campaigns hosted by businesses and organizations across the Alberta Capital Region. SCRs collaborate with volunteers at various workplaces, coordinate events, deliver and facilitate presentations, provide campaign resources, track results, and ensure strong relationships with campaign stakeholders.

SCRs bring strong communication, organization, and relationship-building skills to their roles. They should be comfortable managing multiple priorities, adapting to change, solving problems creatively, and using digital tools like Microsoft Office and customer relationship management software (ideally Salesforce). Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust quickly are key.

A high school diploma is required, and two to three years of experience in administration, fundraising, account management, or event planning is an asset. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will also be considered.

Yes. SCRs must complete a Police Information Check, hold a valid driver’s license, and have access to a vehicle. A current driver’s abstract is also required.

The program runs for 17 weeks, from mid-August to late-December, with employees returning to their workplace in January.

Training, mentorship, a personalized development plan, and day-to-day management of the SCR’s responsibilities.

You can still make an impact by sponsoring the program financially. Your $16,000 sponsorship supports the salary, benefits, and training of a hired SCR.

Your employee returns with new skills, fresh ideas, and stronger community connections. The program also strengthens employee retention, workplace culture, and your reputation as a socially responsible employer.
