Is a Day of Caring right for you?

Days of Caring are unique volunteer experiences designed to support over 50 local agency partners delivering essential services across our region. Because these opportunities are built around agency capacity and community need, they work a little differently than typical group volunteer events. Please read through the FAQs below to better understand what a Day of Caring is — and whether it’s the right fit for what you’re looking for.

A Day of Caring is a group volunteer experience where we match your team with one of our funded agency partners based on where support is most needed at that time.

You’ll volunteer directly with organizations providing basic needs support, educational programs, financial empowerment services, and mental health and well-being supports to people across the Alberta Capital Region.

Many groups find it to be a meaningful team experience, but our primary goal is to ensure agencies receive the support they need to serve their clients effectively.

Days of Caring are designed community-first. Team-building is a positive outcome, not the primary purpose.

Most volunteer opportunities can accommodate 5–10 volunteers per shift.

Agency spaces are designed for the individuals and families they serve. Extra volunteers can unintentionally disrupt service delivery, so group sizes are limited to ensure your presence is truly helpful.

There are great options for larger teams:

  • Book multiple volunteer shifts across different days
  • Pair your Day of Caring with a United Way Impact Speaker
  • Add an engagement activity like the Brain Architecture Game or a Poverty Simulation

We’re happy to help you design an experience that works for your group size while respecting agency capacity.

Our agency partners plan staffing and services around volunteer support. In many cases, they are counting on volunteers to help deliver programs for their clients.

Cancellations or low attendance can affect staff schedules and the people accessing services.

For this reason, we ask that bookings be made only when you have a confirmed group ready to participate.

We place volunteers when and where help is most needed. Because agency needs change throughout the year, available activities, dates, and times will vary.

Each Day of Caring is arranged specifically for your group based on current opportunities.

Volunteer experiences may include:

Food Preparation & Service
Preparing meals, assembling hampers, or supporting food distribution.

Donation Sorting
Organizing clothing, hygiene kits, and household items for families facing hardship.

Event Support
Helping agencies run welcoming community events.

Community Worker Bee
Gardening, cleaning, repairing, or refreshing community spaces.

Yes. As part of your experience, you’ll learn how United Way supports these agencies through operational funding and how your volunteer time contributes to real community outcomes.

Volunteers for United Way of the Alberta Capital Region sort supplies for hygiene kits, in support of Edmonton and area front-line agencies.
